Tackling Common Challenges in Old Homes

Old homes often suffer from fragmented layouts due to existing columns and uneven lighting, frequently overlooking the actual needs of residents. These are common pain points when living in an older property. We’ve used a unique “angled cut” technique to redefine the spatial relationships within the home. This cleverly divides public and private areas, reshaping how spaces connect. It transforms what were once fragmented layouts into clear, cohesive ones, allowing natural light to flow freely and making daily movement comfortable and smooth.

The renovation of this 35-ping (approx. 1150 sq ft) old house was like a love letter from a husband to his wife. We found gentle ways to work within the existing structure, turning an impractical layout into something organic and responsive to their lifestyle.

Redefining Light’s Path with Angled Cuts

Every angled surface in this design serves a purpose: guiding natural light deep into the interior, eliminating dead corners in the layout, and creating layers within the space. We opened up the living room, dining room, and kitchen into one large, open-plan area. The use of angled transitions in flooring materials – where wood and tiles meet – allows them to blend beautifully with the shifting light and shadows. This creates a living space that feels rich in layers but never cluttered.

An Open, Flowing Space Where Light and Shadow Mingle

Thanks to the angled design, the hallway is now bright and free of dark corners. We even incorporated what were once awkward structural columns into the cabinet designs, transforming them from obstacles into integral parts of the living space. The master bedroom now features a dedicated walk-in closet, meeting modern needs, while the secondary bedroom remains flexible, anticipating the potential growth of new family members in the future. The overall aesthetic uses soft white tones paired with light wood grains, creating a fresh, warm, and serene atmosphere. Every corner subtly reflects the sweetness and stability of a newlywed life.

This truly is a love letter written to Ingrid, and a deeply affectionate vision for their future together.
